Warner Bros. Announces New "Ocean's" Prequel Film
The film will be a prequel focusing on the parents of Danny Ocean, starring Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper, who will also direct.
Warner Bros. announced a new prequel film for the "Ocean's" franchise during its CinemaCon presentation on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. The project is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 25, 2027.
Film Details
The film is described as a prequel focusing on the parents of Danny Ocean, the character portrayed by George Clooney in the 2001 film "Ocean's Eleven" and its sequels.
According to a virtual statement from Margot Robbie at the event, the story will depict the characters "in their prime" as they "pull off an epic heist" at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix. Robbie described the parents as "two masterminds" who taught Danny Ocean everything he knows.
- Cast: Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper.
- Director: Bradley Cooper.
- Screenwriter: Carrie Solomon.
- Producers: Bradley Cooper and Margot Robbie's production company, LuckyChap.
- Release Date: June 25, 2027.
- Title: The film is currently untitled.
Production Background
The prequel project was previously in development with other directors attached. Two filmmakers, Lee Isaac Chung and Jay Roach, are no longer involved. Chung departed the project in March 2024. A joint statement from Warner Bros. and LuckyChap at that time cited "creative differences" for his departure.
This prequel is a separate project from another announced sequel to the original "Ocean's" trilogy. That sequel is reported to feature returning cast members George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Don Cheadle reprising their roles.

Studio Performance Context
Warner Bros. reported that in 2025, it had seven consecutive film releases that each opened with over $40 million in domestic box office revenue. Those films, which included "Sinners," "Weapons," and "A Minecraft Movie," generated a combined global total of $4.4 billion.
Studio co-chair Mike De Luca stated this was the first time the studio had reached that financial benchmark since 2019. De Luca attributed the performance to what he described as an "eclectic slate anchored by a diverse line of great films."
Franchise History
The modern "Ocean's" film franchise began at Warner Bros. in 2001 with Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's Eleven," a remake of the studio's 1960 film "Ocean's 11." The Soderbergh-directed trilogy, starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts, concluded with "Ocean's Thirteen" in 2007. A spinoff film, "Ocean's Eight," was released in 2018.
