Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Fan Vote Winner Snubbed for Second Straight Year
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced its inductees for 2025 and 2026, with conflicting reports on the exact year. The announcement has brought renewed scrutiny to the institution's fan voting process.
The 2025/2026 Induction Results
The R&B group New Edition won the public online fan vote with over one million votes, but was not selected for induction by the Hall's official voting body. Conversely, the rap group Wu-Tang Clan, which finished eighth in the fan vote, was selected for induction.
This marks the second consecutive year, and the third time overall, that the winner of the fan vote has not been inducted.
Sources conflict on the induction year, with some reporting the events pertain to the 2025 class and others to the 2026 class.
How the Fan Vote Works
The online fan vote was introduced in 2013. According to the Hall's stated process:
- The collective public vote counts as a single ballot within the larger voting body of over 1,200 music industry professionals, historians, and past inductees.
- Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Chairman John Sykes stated in a recent interview that the fan vote tallies are shared with the nominating committee.
Sykes explained the vote is not given more weight than other ballots. He said this is to prevent artists with highly organized fan bases from being disproportionately favored over artists who may not have such active support.
A History of the Fan Vote
The fan vote has had a mixed record in influencing final induction decisions:
- 2013: Rush won the inaugural fan vote and was inducted the same year.
- Other Inducted Winners: Past fan vote winners who were later inducted include Kiss (2014), Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble (2015), and Tina Turner (2021).
- 2020: The Dave Matthews Band won the fan vote but was not inducted until 2024. The runner-up that year, Pat Benatar, was inducted in 2022.
- 2024/2025: The band Phish won the fan vote but was not inducted, marking the beginning of the current two-year streak where the fan vote winner was not selected.
Allegations of Compromised Voting
Last week, Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man posted a statement on social media alleging the fan vote was "contaminated by bots." He wrote, "It's not fair to the nominees or the legit voters," before deleting the post. The Wu-Tang Clan finished eighth in the fan vote and was selected for induction.
