GoPro Announces MISSION 1 Series: New Action Cinema Cameras

GoPro has announced a new line of cameras called the MISSION 1 series, which the company describes as action cinema cameras. The series features a new 50-megapixel 1-inch sensor and a GP3 processor, with models offering video recording up to 8K resolution and an interchangeable lens option. The first models will be available for preorder in late May 2024.

Product Lineup and Core Specifications

The MISSION 1 series consists of three primary models, all built around a new 50MP 1-inch sensor and a GP3 processor built on a 5nm architecture.

  • MISSION 1 PRO: This flagship model supports video capture at 8K60, 4K240, and 1080p960 in a 16:9 aspect ratio. It also features Open Gate recording at up to 8K30 and 4K120 in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • MISSION 1 PRO ILS: This model shares the specifications of the MISSION 1 PRO but adds an interchangeable lens mount compatible with Micro Four Thirds lenses. GoPro states it supports in-camera HyperSmooth video stabilization when used with certain rectilinear, prime focal length lenses.
  • MISSION 1: This model utilizes the same sensor and processor but has more limited video capabilities. It is limited to 4K120 Open Gate recording and 16:9 recording at 8K30, 4K120, and 1080p240.

Detailed Technical Features

Key specifications reported across the MISSION 1 series include:

  • Imaging: The 50MP sensor is reported to offer up to 14 stops of dynamic range at the sensor level. It supports 10-bit color, HLG HDR, and a GP Log2 color profile.
  • Audio: The cameras feature a 32-bit float audio recording system with an improved multi-microphone setup. They support Bluetooth audio and are compatible with wireless microphones.
  • Photo: All models can capture 50MP still photos with RAW support.
  • Durability and Battery: The cameras have a waterproof design rated to 20 meters without an external housing. Battery life is cited as up to 5+ hours when recording at 1080p and 3+ hours at 4K on a single charge.

"With the launch of the MISSION 1 Series, GoPro is entering the premium end of the digital imaging market in a significant way. The combination of the new sensor and processor sets a new performance bar for compact cinema cameras."
