French Tourists Fined for Public Indecency on Phuket Beach
Two French tourists were arrested and fined in Phuket, Thailand, on April 10 after being filmed engaging in sexual acts on a public beach.
The incident prompted complaints from local residents and led to police action, resulting in a financial penalty for the individuals involved.
Incident Details
On April 10, two French tourists, identified as Halan and Nadia, both 24 years old, engaged in sexual activity on Rayee beach in Phuket. The incident occurred during daylight hours and was recorded by witnesses. The video footage was subsequently circulated online.
The activity drew complaints from local residents in the area.
Police Action and Legal Outcome
Following the reports, police located and arrested Halan and Nadia at a hotel in the Kathu district of Phuket.
Both individuals were each fined 5,000 Thai baht, approximately 220 Australian dollars. The official charge was for "committing an indecent act in public by being naked or exposing the body, or committing other obscene acts."
According to Police Colonel Anurak Parinyasathirakul, the tourists stated they were unaware their actions were illegal. The police official reported that the couple said they "became carried away in the moment" while on holiday.
The tourists admitted to the act, paid the fine, and their details were recorded. Immigration authorities were notified of the case for visa consideration.
Local Reaction
Local media reports cited complaints from some residents regarding the incident. The complaints included criticism of a perceived lack of police patrols in the area.
"So many foreigners do this when they come here. They're like animals. I would rather be poor, without any tourists visiting, than live in this environment."
Residents were quoted expressing disapproval of the tourists' behavior. Another resident commented on enforcement, saying:
"Great, go for it. Because in our country, there are no rules or regulations. It's shameful. You can do whatever you want because the laws aren't strict enough."
