Garmin Alpha App: A Review of Features and Usability

Key Details

The Garmin Alpha app requires a separate download and lacks integration with other Garmin device management apps.

The app's tracking features are reported to be difficult to locate, and its interface is compared to those of Tractive and Fi apps, which are described as having a more user-friendly and navigable design. Users familiar with the Garmin ecosystem are noted to find the app manageable.

App Features and Operation

The app displays a map showing the user's location, the dog's location, the distance the dog has traveled, and records of previous walks, hikes, or hunts. Users can toggle between different devices within the app if multiple devices are connected.

The arrow icon representing the dog's location on the map does not update automatically. Users must manually refresh the map view to recenter on the dog's location if the arrow moves off-screen.

The app does not support starting tracking for hikes or activities directly; tracking must be initiated by pressing a button on the physical Garmin Alpha device. Furthermore, the app does not differentiate between modes of travel, such as driving versus walking.

Performance with Paired Devices

Pairing the Garmin Alpha LTE device with other Garmin collars, such as the Alpha T 20 or Alpha 10 handheld, is reported to increase battery life and location reliability.

Location data for the dog can switch between satellite and LTE signals based on availability. The dog's location can be viewed either through the Garmin app on a phone or on a paired handheld device.
