UFC Fighter Daniel Rodriguez Released After Eight Months in Mexican Jail

UFC welterweight Daniel Rodriguez has been released from a Mexican jail after an eight-month detention. The fighter was arrested at the border in 2025 for possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.

Rodriguez stated the arrest occurred after he crossed into Mexico following his unanimous decision victory over Kevin Holland at UFC 318 in July 2025. He has since resumed training and stated he aims to book a fight in 2026.

Arrest and Initial Charges

According to Rodriguez, he was crossing into Mexico for a vacation when he was stopped by border patrol. He stated he forgot he had a small amount of marijuana with him. A vehicle inspection led to his arrest.

Rodriguez reported that Mexican authorities charged him with a smuggling offense, which he described as a serious charge under Mexican law. He stated he initially expected a brief detention.

Conditions of Detention

Rodriguez described the jail conditions as difficult. He stated his initial cell was overcrowded, holding approximately 25 people in a space designed for six. He reported that yard access for exercise was limited to twice per week and that the quality of food was poor, which he said affected his nutrition.

Rodriguez stated his status as a UFC fighter led to recognition by guards and inmates. He said guards requested photos, and he expressed concern that this visibility could make him a target among other detainees, leading him to attempt to maintain a low profile.

After approximately 12 days, Rodriguez reported that his conditions changed. He stated that after other inmates became aware of his identity, he was moved to a different section of the facility, which he referred to as a "VIP section." Rodriguez also stated he was able to arrange for some workout equipment and paid guards to allow him to train with focus mitts while detained.

Judicial Process and Release

Rodriguez stated the Mexican judicial process moved slowly. He reported attending multiple court dates that did not result in his release and said that at one point he was informed he might remain detained until the summer. He credited his legal team with securing his release but did not specify the exact legal mechanism that led to it.

Rodriguez stated he received support during his detention from fellow fighters Yair Rodriguez and Brian Ortega, his management team, and the UFC. He also mentioned a letter of recommendation from Raul at Entram Gym. Rodriguez noted that the ability of these parties to intervene was limited by Mexican government procedures.

Career Status and Future Plans

Rodriguez's detention interrupted his UFC career following a three-fight winning streak. The fighter is 39 years old. Since his release, he has posted videos of himself training.

Rodriguez stated he is optimistic about returning to competition and aims to book a UFC fight in 2026.
