Historic Leadership Changes Announced for Australian Defence Force

The Australian Defence Force will undergo a series of senior leadership changes in mid-2026, including the appointment of the first woman to lead the Australian Army. The changes follow the scheduled conclusion of the current Defence Force Chief's term and the retirement of the incumbent Army Chief.

Key Appointments

Defence Force Chief: Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, the current Chief of Navy, will become the new Chief of the Australian Defence Force in July 2026. He will succeed General David Johnston.

Army Chief: Lieutenant General Susan Coyle will become the new Chief of Army, replacing General Simon Stuart, who is retiring. This will be the first time a woman has led the Australian Army.

Navy Chief: Vice Admiral Matthew Buckley, a former submarine commander, will succeed Mark Hammond as the Chief of Navy.

Background of Incoming Leaders

Vice Admiral Mark Hammond has served in the Royal Australian Navy for 40 years. His career includes experience as a submarine commander. He has served as Chief of Navy since 2022 and, according to Defence Minister Richard Marles, has been involved in planning for the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS security pact.

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle joined the Australian Army Reserves as a soldier in 1987. She has held several senior roles, most recently serving as the Head of Joint Capabilities within the Defence Force.

Vice Admiral Matthew Buckley is a former submarine commander.

Context of the Changes

The leadership transition is prompted by the conclusion of General David Johnston's two-year term as Defence Force Chief, which began in 2024. General Simon Stuart, the current Chief of Army, is retiring.

Official Statements

Defence Minister Richard Marles described Lieutenant General Coyle's appointment as "a deeply historic moment, one that should be noted."

He also quoted Coyle's statement, "You cannot be what you cannot see," and noted that her achievement would be significant for women serving or considering service in the defence force.

Regarding Vice Admiral Hammond, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated he has had a distinguished career. Minister Marles said Hammond had been involved in AUKUS submarine planning.

Related Personnel Change

A separate, pending change in the Department of Defence's civilian leadership was also noted. The government has not yet announced a replacement for Greg Moriarty, the Secretary of the Department of Defence, who is slated to become Australia's Ambassador to the United States.
