Rockstar Games Confirms Data Security Incident Following Hacker Claims

Video game developer Rockstar Games has confirmed a data security incident after the hacker group ShinyHunters claimed to have accessed its cloud servers. The company states the breach involved a third party and had no impact on its operations or players.
The Claim and Company Response
The hacker group ShinyHunters posted a message on its website claiming to have infiltrated Rockstar Games' cloud servers.
In its message, the group stated Rockstar Games had until April 14 to make contact, or it would leak the accessed information. Some reports characterized the message as a "pay or leak" warning.
ShinyHunters claimed the release of the information could cause "several annoying (digital) problems" but did not specify what data was allegedly accessed. The claims were first reported by the cybersecurity news websites Hackread and Cybersec Guru.
In response to these reports, Rockstar Games provided a statement to the publication Kotaku. The company confirmed "a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach." Rockstar Games further stated the incident had "no impact on our organization or our players."
Background on ShinyHunters and Previous Rockstar Incident
According to previous reports, the ShinyHunters group has been linked to data breaches targeting other companies, including Microsoft, Google, and Ticketmaster.
This is not the first major security incident for Rockstar Games. In 2022, the company experienced a separate hack that led to the leak of gameplay footage and development assets for the then-unreleased game Grand Theft Auto VI.
Following the 2022 breach, one 18-year-old member of the Lapsus$ group, which was reportedly responsible for that leak, received a sentence of indefinite hospitalization.
