NRL Disruptor Rule Under Scrutiny After Controversial Try Disallowed

A try disallowed during a recent National Rugby League match has prompted discussion among coaches regarding the application of the league's "disruptor" rule. The controversy follows similar comments made about the rule's interpretation in a separate match the previous day.

The Match Incident

During an NRL match between the Sydney Roosters and the Cronulla Sharks on Saturday evening, a try scored by Roosters player Robert Toia was disallowed by the video review official, commonly referred to as "the bunker."

The decision was made under the NRL's "disruptor" rule. The video referee ruled that Toia interfered with Cronulla Sharks winger Sam Stonestreet's ability to catch the ball in mid-air.

The ruling was applied despite both players contesting for possession.

Post-Match Reaction

Following the match, Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson commented on the decision. Robinson stated he was surprised by the ruling and expressed the view that the interpretation of the disruptor rule has "gone too far" from its original intent.

He described the incident as "a clear example of two guys in a contest" and characterized the call as "overcompensation." Robinson suggested the NRL should issue a clarifying statement on the rule's application.

Roosters captain James Tedesco supported Robinson's view. Tedesco stated that both players were looking at and competing for the ball, which he described as a standard contest in the sport.

Background on the Rule and Wider Context

The disruptor rule was introduced to penalize players who interfere with an opponent attempting to catch a kick without making a genuine attempt to catch the ball themselves. The rule was designed to address situations where players, particularly when targeting fullbacks, make contact with opponents in the air without competing for possession.

The discussion following the Roosters-Sharks match occurred one day after Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire also commented on the application of the disruptor rule.

Madigue had raised questions about the rule following his team's loss to the North Queensland Cowboys on Friday.

The Sydney Roosters won the match against the Cronulla Sharks.
