Supercars Announces Rule and Schedule Adjustments for Taupo Event

The Supercars Championship has announced a series of adjustments to the sporting rules, points allocation, and schedule for its upcoming event at Taupo, New Zealand. According to the championship, the modifications were required due to a change in the race schedule and were approved by acting CEO Barclay Nettlefold.

Rule Change: Suspension of Setup Prohibition

A rule prohibiting teams from making car setup changes between the second qualifying session and the first race on Saturdays has been suspended for the Taupo event. The rule is in effect at other Super440 events for the 2024 season.

Purpose of Original Rule: Supercars states the rule was introduced to add a strategic element, requiring teams to balance their car for both qualifying and race performance, and to reduce workload for team crews on busy Saturdays.

Reason for Suspension: The suspension is due to changes in the Taupo event schedule. A 200km race originally scheduled for Sunday has been moved to Saturday. Sources indicate teams had already formulated their strategies based on the original schedule, contributing to the decision to suspend the rule for this event.

Revised Taupo Event Schedule and Specifications

The schedule change has led to several specific adjustments for the Taupo weekend:

Race Distances and Tyre Allocation:

  • Saturday Race 1: 120km, using the super soft tyre compound.
  • Saturday Race 2: 200km, using the soft tyre compound.
  • Sunday Race: 120km, using the soft tyre compound.

Qualifying Change: The Sunday schedule, which includes a qualifying session and the 120km race, will no longer feature a Top 10 Shootout session.

Championship Points Allocation

The points awarded for race wins have been adjusted to reflect the changed schedule:

  • The winner of the Saturday 200km race will receive 140 championship points.
  • The winner of the Sunday 120km race will receive 80 championship points.

The series of adjustments, including the points reallocation, required formal approval from acting CEO Barclay Nettlefold as part of the overall schedule modification.
