Rookie Offensive Tackle Performance: An Inaugural Season Analysis (2016-2025)
This analysis investigates the probability of rookie offensive tackles performing well in their inaugural NFL season, drawing data from the 2016-2025 draft classes.
Methodology
The study compiled data for all rookie tackles who played snaps between 2016 and 2025, utilizing snap counts, draft slot, and PFF grades.
Success for a rookie tackle was defined by exceeding a benchmark of 894 snaps played and a PFF grade of 67.9, representative of a player's hypothetical 2025 performance.
Overall Rookie Tackle Performance (2016-2025)
Out of 84 rookie tackles examined across the 2016-2025 draft classes, the data reveals a varied distribution and performance:
- Draft Slot Distribution:
- 33% were drafted between picks 1-16.
- 21% were drafted between picks 17-50.
- 45% were drafted at pick 51 or beyond.
- Performance Metrics:
- 46% played more snaps than the defined benchmark.
- 32% achieved a PFF score above the benchmark.
- Only 20% met both the snap count and PFF score benchmarks.
Analysis of Meaningful Playtime
The dataset was refined to include only rookies with "meaningful" playtime, defined as more than 600 snaps (approximately 9-10 full games) in their rookie season. This refinement reduced the group to 58 players, representing 69% of the total rookie tackles examined.
Of these 58 players with meaningful playtime, 43% (25/58) scored higher than the 67.9 PFF benchmark.
Impact of Draft Slot on Success
Further analysis of the 58 players with meaningful playtime revealed the following success rates (exceeding the 67.9 PFF grade) based on their draft position:
- Players drafted prior to pick 17 (28 total): 54% (15/28) scored better than 67.9.
- Players drafted between picks 17-50 (14 total): 29% (4/14) scored better than 67.9.
- Players drafted between picks 51-118 (10 total): 40% (4/10) scored better than 67.9.
- Players drafted after pick 118 (5 total): 40% (2/5) scored better than 67.9.
Average Rookie PFF Grades by Draft Slot
The average PFF scores for rookies varied significantly by their draft position:
- Rookies drafted in the Top 10 averaged a PFF score of 70.27.
- Rookies drafted between picks 11-32 averaged 66.21.
- Rookies drafted in the Second Round averaged 62.11.
- The overall average for all rookies examined was 740 snaps and a 61.9 PFF score.
