The incident occurred on October 2, 2024, when a privately practicing midwife assisted a woman with a home birth in Wallsend.

The mother subsequently attended John Hunter Hospital two days later, where an emergency caesarean section was performed. The newborn died six days later while at the hospital.

Following ongoing investigations, a 28-year-old colleague of the midwife was arrested at Newcastle Police Station and charged with manslaughter.

Bail was refused, and the individual is scheduled to appear in Bail Division Court 2.
