Woman Found Deceased on Barkly Highway, Partner Arrested in Suspicious Death
A 27-year-old woman, Christine Marshall Hunter, was found deceased with visible facial injuries on the Barkly Highway in the Northern Territory on Sunday morning. Her 33-year-old partner has been arrested in connection with her death, which police are treating as suspicious.
Authorities allege Hunter was assaulted hours before her death, disputing the partner's initial report of a kangaroo collision.
Discovery and Initial Report
Christine Marshall Hunter, 27, was discovered deceased on the Barkly Highway near Barkly Homestead around 8:00 AM on Sunday. Police reported she had visible facial injuries.
Approximately two hours earlier, at 5:47 AM, a 33-year-old man, identified as Hunter's partner, contacted emergency services. He reported that his partner was not breathing and stated they had reportedly struck a kangaroo earlier that morning while driving west on the highway, attributing her injuries to this incident. Upon the arrival of officers, Hunter had already died.
Police Investigation and Allegations
Investigators allege that Hunter had been assaulted hours prior to the emergency call. Police believe the alleged assault occurred around 1:30 AM while the pair were in a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee. The vehicle was reportedly parked near the intersection of the Barkly and Tablelands highways, with the alleged incident occurring between 1:30 AM and 5:30 AM.
Acting Commander Mark Grieve stated that no evidence consistent with a kangaroo strike was found at the scene. Authorities are examining damage to the Jeep Cherokee to determine if it was recent or pre-existing. The man has been arrested, and police are treating Hunter's death as suspicious.
Travel Route and Public Appeal
The couple is believed to have traveled from Gympie, Queensland, commencing their journey on April 1. Their suspected travel route included Ban Ban Springs, Emerald, Winton, Cloncurry, Mount Isa, and Camooweal in Queensland.
Police have released an image of the dark-colored Jeep Cherokee and are appealing to the public for information. They request that anyone who may have seen the vehicle or its occupants contact authorities.
Family's Response and Fundraiser
Hunter's sister, Jazmyne Le Cerf, confirmed her death, stating the family was affected. Le Cerf also mentioned that Hunter was one of eight siblings and that the relationship between Hunter and the arrested man began in January.
A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated by Le Cerf to assist with expenses to return Hunter to Queensland for a funeral service.
