Collingwood's New Midfield Gem: Angus Anderson's Rise to Debut
Collingwood’s National Recruiting Manager Shane O’Bree traveled to South Australia to observe Sturt midfielder Angus Anderson a day after the Pies' 2025 Preliminary Final loss, tracking him as a potential draft prospect. O'Bree and recruiter Shannon Collins had been closely monitoring Anderson, 22.
Anderson led Sturt to a SANFL premiership victory that Sunday, collecting 24 touches and kicking a crucial goal. His performance earned him the Jack Oatey Medal for best on ground, solidifying Collingwood's interest.
From SANFL Star to AFL Prospect
O'Bree highlighted Anderson's versatility, toughness, and ability to get forward, kick goals, and set up plays. His contested work was noted as a key strength, with O'Bree believing Anderson perfectly fit Collingwood's playing style.
A Path Forged in Hard Work
Anderson's journey to the AFL was not straightforward; he was undrafted in 2021 and played for Sydney's reserves in 2022 before joining Sturt in 2023. Sturt coach Marty Mattner initially stated that Anderson struggled to secure a senior spot due to a strong midfield.
Mattner advised Anderson to improve his fitness and adapt to different roles, a challenge Anderson committed to by training early mornings while working full-time. This unwavering commitment led to significant improvement, eventually earning him a midfield opportunity in 2025. He subsequently averaged 20 disposals, four clearances, and four inside 50s per game, earning multiple accolades.
Angus Anderson's dedication to improving his fitness and adapting his game while working full-time ultimately paved his way from SANFL struggles to an AFL opportunity.
Debut on Familiar Ground
Collingwood drafted Anderson with pick 57, a testament to his perseverance and late-blooming talent. Six months later, Anderson is set to make his AFL debut in Collingwood’s Gather Round clash at Adelaide Oval. This return is poignant, as it is the very venue of his SANFL Grand Final heroics.
Sturt coach Marty Mattner has maintained contact with Anderson, noting the family's continued connection to the club, with Angus's younger brother Hamish now also playing for Sturt.
