Former Apple Vision Pro Developers Unveil "Button" AI Hardware Device

Chris Nolet and Ryan Burgoyne, former developers from Apple Vision Pro, have introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) hardware device named "Button." The device is currently available for preorder at $179 and is scheduled to begin shipping in December. The developers are associated with the Y Combinator startup accelerator.

Device Overview and Core Functionality

The "Button" device is an AI hardware puck designed to resemble an iPod Shuffle. It integrates a generative AI chatbot that activates when its physical button is pressed.

Upon activation, the chatbot is capable of listening, answering questions, and responding to user commands. Audio responses can be delivered directly from the device or transmitted via Bluetooth to connected earbuds or smart glasses.

Emphasizing Privacy Through Design

A key aspect highlighted by Nolet and Burgoyne is the device's focus on privacy and immediacy. Unlike some other AI devices, "Button" only initiates its listening function when the physical button is actively pressed, thereby preventing continuous or passive recording.

Chris Nolet stated that this privacy-centric design was influenced by a personal experience where a conversation he was part of was unknowingly recorded by another individual's wearable device.

"Button" in the AI Device Landscape

The developers describe "Button" as offering a simpler application compared to devices such as the Humane Ai Pin. The Humane Ai Pin was a wearable device launched in 2024 with the stated aim of replacing smartphones; however, it was discontinued or ceased operations within a year of its release.
