Isabella Nichols Advances to Quarterfinals After Bells Beach Upset Over Carissa Moore
Isabella Nichols has defeated five-time world champion Carissa Moore at the Bells Beach surfing competition, securing her place in the quarterfinals. This significant victory means Nichols and fellow surfer Molly Picklum are now the only Australian competitors left in the event.
Nichols's triumph over the returning world champion was a highlight, securing her spot in the next round.
In quiet conditions, Nichols demonstrated a strong performance, achieving a total score of 16.27 points. Her winning effort included an impressive 8.50-point ride, followed by a solid 7.77-point score. Moore, returning to the World Surf League tour, scored 15.07 points, with her best ride registering 7.90 points in a late exchange during the heat.
Nichols described the challenging, slow conditions as a 'chess match,' emphasizing the importance of careful wave selection. She also graciously acknowledged Moore, stating that the five-time world champion was an inspiration for her own return to competitive surfing after having a baby.
This heat marked Nichols's first appearance in the nine-day competition window, which had previously experienced a halt due to various factors.
Looking Ahead
Nichols is now scheduled to compete against Caitlin Simmers in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Molly Picklum, the other remaining Australian, will face Lakey Peterson in the semifinals.
Competition is anticipated to resume on Friday.
