Sydney Metro West: Initial Station Designs Approved for Rapid CBD Connection

The New South Wales (NSW) government has approved the initial designs for six stations on the Sydney Metro West line. These stations—Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, and Hunter Street—are intended to reflect the unique character of their respective locations. The project aims to establish a rail connection between western Sydney areas and the Sydney Central Business District (CBD) in under 20 minutes. The overall Metro West project is anticipated to be completed in 2032.

Project Scope and Financials

The approved developments are estimated to cost approximately $600 million. This initiative aligns with broader state government housing plans, which include the proposed construction of up to 8,500 homes at The Bays precinct.

NSW Premier Chris Minns stated that by 2036, during peak hours, an estimated 20,000 people are projected to travel east towards Sydney's CBD, while 10,000 are expected to travel west to Parramatta CBD.

When questioned about potential cost increases due to global events, Premier Minns indicated that such forecasts were not currently in place but acknowledged existing pressures on construction projects. Transport Minister John Graham identified the Metro West line as significant due to its connections to areas such as Pyrmont, The Bays, and Sydney Olympic Park. Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car remarked that the rapid travel time between Parramatta and Sydney's CBD would be "transformational" for Western Sydney residents. Member for Strathfield Jason Yat-Sen Li highlighted the Burwood North Station's role in enhancing commuter convenience.

Distinctive Station Design Details

The design for each station is planned to incorporate distinct local characteristics:

  • The Bays Station: Designs will feature views of the White Bay Power Station and its chimneys.
  • Westmead Station: Architectural colors are intended to draw inspiration from local geology and plant life.
  • North Strathfield Station: Designs are set to reflect the suburb's distinctive street frontages, including arches and brick facades found in nearby buildings.
  • Five Dock Station: Located at Fred Kelly Place, the local council has a defined vision for its design.
  • Burwood North Station: Will include a 60-meter underground walkway to facilitate crossing Parramatta Road.

Project Timeline

Major tunneling works for the Sydney Metro West project have concluded. The final designs for these stations are scheduled for completion in early 2027. Construction of the train lines and stations is expected to commence by the end of the current year. Contracts for the remaining western stations, which include Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, and Pyrmont, are anticipated to be announced later this year.
