Abbott Elementary: Gregory and Janine Split in "April Fools" as Brunson Discusses Future

The 19th episode of Abbott Elementary season five, titled “April Fools,” featured the breakup of characters Gregory (Tyler James Williams) and Janine (Quinta Brunson).

The separation was prompted by disagreements over planning their first couple’s trip, specifically concerning financial philosophies and travel preferences. Gregory favored an economical road trip and Airbnb to the Outer Banks, while Janine preferred direct flights, a hotel, and spa treatments. An attempted compromise on Atlantic City failed when Janine purchased flights to the Outer Banks, leading to an argument. This argument ultimately concluded with Janine suggesting a breakup, a sentiment Gregory did not protest.

Creator's Perspective: Unpacking the Breakup

Creator and star Quinta Brunson discussed the storyline, stating that the breakup was an intentional and unexpected development for the season.

Brunson aimed to explore deeper relationship dynamics beyond the initial “honeymoon phase,” using a seemingly minor trip planning conflict as a catalyst for larger issues within the relationship.

She indicated that Janine’s suggestion of breaking up surprised herself, and Gregory’s silence reinforced her fears.

Looking Ahead: Season 5 and Beyond

Episode 20, “Night Out,” is set to revisit an iconic show location and reveal new facets of various characters. Brunson also addressed a social media prank about Janelle James (Ava) leaving the show, confirming it was a joke and emphasizing Ava’s importance to the series. Regarding Janine’s future romantic prospects, Brunson gave a 5/10 probability for a reunion with Tariq and confirmed that Dominic, played by Luke Tennie, will reappear before the season concludes.

Pacing & Milestones: Brunson on the Creative Journey

Brunson also discussed the creative process for seasons five and six, highlighting the challenge of pacing storylines across 22-episode seasons while preserving engaging content for future development. She expressed excitement about the show’s season six renewal, which will bring Abbott Elementary to its 100-episode mark, a milestone she plans to commemorate with a celebratory cake.
