The fire occurred at 4:17 AM local time on Wednesday, April 8, at the Olympic velodrome located within Rio de Janeiro's Olympic Park. The blaze was concentrated in the roof of the arena, reportedly reaching and spreading through its canvas ceiling.

The state's military fire department deployed approximately 80 firefighters and 20 fire trucks to the scene.

Firefighters engaged the blaze both inside and outside the building to bring it under control. Officials confirmed that no injuries occurred and that the fire was contained without posing a risk of spreading to other parts of the complex.

Response and Protection Measures

During the emergency response, firefighters specifically worked to protect the artifacts housed within the Olympic Museum, which is located inside the velodrome. Lieutenant Colonel Fabio Contreiras confirmed these protective measures were undertaken.

Damage Assessment

Forensic experts are currently evaluating the full extent of the damage to the velodrome.

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere stated that both the velodrome and the Olympic Museum were "barely affected" by the fire, noting they sustained "minimal damage."
