Crews aboard Orion's Integrity spacecraft and the International Space Station (ISS) conducted a historic space-to-space call on Tuesday night. During the communication, commanders Reid Wiseman of Orion and Jessica Weir of the ISS exchanged lighthearted remarks about setting distance milestones, while also emphasizing their ongoing scientific activities and the importance of global collaboration in space exploration.
Historic Communication
On Tuesday night, astronauts from Orion's Integrity spacecraft and the International Space Station (ISS) engaged in a significant space-to-space communication. The call connected Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman and Christina Koch from the four-member Orion crew with ISS Commander Jessica Weir, representing the seven-member International Space Station crew.
Lighthearted Remarks Exchanged
During the call, both crews exchanged jokes regarding setting distance records in space.
ISS Commander Jessica Weir commented that her crew had "joked about running to the far end of the space station when you guys were on the other side, so that we could claim we were the furthest away from you in that moment."
Orion Commander Reid Wiseman responded with similar remarks, noting that his crew "were doing the same shenanigans here when we got to the furthest point from the moon," and had made jokes about attempting to be the furthest from Earth while inside their spacecraft.
Focus on Mission and Collaboration
Commander Wiseman clarified that despite the lighthearted exchanges, both crews remained focused on their primary scientific activities. He conveyed appreciation from the four members of the Integrity spacecraft to the seven members of the International Space Station, underscoring that achievements of this scale require global collaboration.
