The Masters Champions Dinner: An Enduring Tradition
The Masters Champions Dinner, also known as the Masters Club, is an annual tradition held on the Tuesday night of Masters week at the Augusta National clubhouse.
This exclusive event is attended by past Masters champions and the club chairman, with the reigning champion from the previous year hosting and selecting the menu.
Origin and Evolution
The tradition began in 1952, following a suggestion by Ben Hogan after his 1951 victory. Hogan proposed that the previous year's champion host a dinner for past winners and the club chairman. Hogan initially served as the unofficial master of ceremonies for four years. Byron Nelson took over this role in 1956 and held it for nearly 50 years until 2004. Two-time Masters winner Ben Crenshaw then assumed the role, presiding over his 42nd dinner this year.
Dinner Protocol and Atmosphere
Seating at the dinner is not assigned, though older champions typically occupy their preferred spots. The reigning Masters champion sits between the club chairman, Fred Ridley, and Ben Crenshaw, and is usually asked to speak. Past champions describe the dinner as a significant tradition characterized by camaraderie and a shared appreciation for winning the tournament. Scottie Scheffler described initial nervousness as a host.
Jordan Spieth noted that informal seating arrangements often lead to champions sitting in similar groups each year, avoiding areas typically occupied by legends like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
Memorable Moments
Trevor Immelman, the 2008 champion, highlighted the 2016 dinner where Arnold Palmer spoke about the Masters' importance, shortly before his passing. The 2020 dinner, hosted by Tiger Woods after his 2019 victory, was described as emotional, with Woods speaking about his family. Hideki Matsuyama's 2022 dinner was noted for his unexpected speech in English without notes. Adam Scott recalled being deeply moved when he hosted in 2014, acknowledging the presence of golf's greatest players.
2025 Dinner and Menu
Rory McIlroy, as the 2025 Masters winner, will host this year's Champions Dinner. Ben Crenshaw stated he would welcome McIlroy, acknowledging his career Grand Slam achievement. Approximately 32 past champions are expected to attend, including Gary Player (90), Tommy Aaron (89), and Charles Coody (88). Notably, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are not attending.
McIlroy's chosen menu includes wagyu filet mignon or seared salmon, yellow fin tuna, and a selection of high-end wines, such as 2015 Salon Brut Champagne and 1990 Chateau Lafite Rothschild. Ben Crenshaw indicated the dinner's cost would likely be substantial for the host.
