Flight Diversion Due to Cyclone Vaianu

Fiji Airways flight FJ910, originating from Sydney and destined for Nadi, Fiji, was diverted to Nuku'alofa, Tonga, following three unsuccessful landing attempts in Nadi.

The diversion occurred due to adverse weather conditions associated with Severe Tropical Cyclone Vaianu, which is impacting the region.

Severe Weather Conditions

The cyclone brought heavy rain, flash flooding, and strong winds to Fiji. Fiji's Meteorological Service reported the cyclone was approximately 255 kilometers west-south-west of Nadi.

Passenger Experience

During the challenging landing attempts in Nadi, some passengers experienced motion sickness due to the turbulent conditions.

Airline Response and Wider Impact

Fiji Airways stated the diversion was a precautionary measure, adhering to the airline's safety protocols. The airline emphasized that safety remains the highest priority during severe weather. They apologized for the inconvenience and confirmed the aircraft would continue its journey to Nadi once conditions improve.

Fiji Airports reported significant disruptions, including the cancellation of six international flights from airlines such as Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia. Additionally, all Fiji Link domestic flights were cancelled because of the weather induced by Tropical Cyclone Vaianu.

The broader Pacific region is currently facing the impact of two cyclones: Vaianu near Fiji and Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila near Papua New Guinea.
