Super Netball Round 4: Key Results and Unbeaten Streaks

Round 4 of Super Netball concluded with several matches showcasing significant goal margins and notable performances.

The Queensland Firebirds defeated the Giants 78–55, a victory that notably ended a challenging 15-game losing streak for the Firebirds. Meanwhile, the Melbourne Mavericks presented a formidable challenge to the Adelaide Thunderbirds, who ultimately secured their fourth consecutive win 55–48.

The Queensland Firebirds broke a 15-game losing streak with a dominant win over the Giants.

In a thrilling comeback, the West Coast Fever overcame an initial seven-goal deficit to defeat the NSW Swifts 77–57. The Melbourne Vixens continued their impressive run, maintaining their undefeated record with a 70–59 victory over the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

Netball and Gambling: A Distinct Position in Australian Sport

Netball has consistently maintained a position of not having ties to sports gambling, a stance that stands in contrast to many other major sports in Australia. This unique commercial approach is particularly highlighted following the federal government's recent announcement of new rules to reform betting in sport, which are scheduled to take effect in January 2027.

Financial Pressures and Exploring Commercial Avenues

During her tenure as CEO of Netball Australia, Kelly Ryan faced significant financial difficulties, with the organization reporting a $4 million debt. Amidst these challenges, Ryan stated that considering gambling sponsorships was not "out of the realms of possibility" given their lucrative nature and the sport's pressing need to explore new commercial avenues.

"Considering gambling sponsorships was not 'out of the realms of possibility' due to their lucrative nature."

However, proposals for partnerships with wagering companies ultimately did not proceed. This was primarily due to strong opposition from the netball community and influential organizations like the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, which raised considerable concerns about the association with harm and the sport's overall reputation. Ryan resigned in December 2023.

Federal Reforms: Impact on Australian Sports

The new federal reforms are set to significantly impact sports like the NRL and AFL, which have a considerable reliance on gambling investment. These impending changes include:

  • A ban on gambling branding on uniforms and venues.
  • Prohibiting celebrities and sports personalities from appearing in promotions.
  • Restricting betting advertisements on live sports television broadcasts between 6 am and 8:30 pm.

Due to its existing commercial approach and historical avoidance of gambling ties, Netball is expected to be less affected by these new regulations.

Giants' Performance and Ownership Uncertainty

The Giants are currently facing a difficult start to the Super Netball season, mirroring their 2024 performance with a winless record after four rounds.

On-Court Performance: A Difficult Start

The team has undergone significant personnel changes recently, including the departure of former coach Julie Fitzgerald and co-captains Jo Harten and Jamie-Lee Price. The current roster is predominantly composed of younger players, indicating a period of rebuilding for the club.

Ownership Quandary: Legal Scrutiny for Mounties Group

Adding to the on-court struggles, the club's future is subject to an unresolved ownership situation. Mounties Group had previously expressed interest in acquiring a Super Netball license from Netball NSW.

However, this process halted abruptly in July when AUSTRAC initiated federal court proceedings against Mounties Group. The group was accused of "serious and systemic" non-compliance with anti-money laundering and counterterrorism financing laws. These allegations included facilitating nearly $140 million in wagering from high-risk gamblers.

Netball Australia has reportedly postponed the consideration of the Mounties Group proposal pending the outcome of these legal proceedings. This situation presents a significant discussion point regarding the sport's potential association with entities involved in gambling, particularly given netball's historical avoidance of such ties.

The Giants' ownership situation highlights netball's ongoing debate regarding potential associations with gambling entities, contrasting its historical stance.
