Australia Delays Final XI Selection for SCG Ashes Test; England Announces 12-Player Squad

View source

Australia has not finalized its starting eleven for the fifth and final Ashes Test against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), with stand-in captain Steve Smith indicating that decisions are pending a pitch inspection. Selection options under consideration include varying numbers of spinners and all-rounders. Meanwhile, England announced a 12-player squad on Friday, suggesting potential Ashes debuts. The match, which Australia has already secured, is scheduled to begin on Sunday.

Australia's Selection Deliberations

Stand-in captain Steve Smith stated on Saturday morning that all selection options remain open for Australia's final Ashes Test against England at the SCG. The team's final composition will be determined after an evaluation of the pitch conditions.

Smith did not confirm the selection of spinner Todd Murphy, despite prior indications from coach Andrew McDonald that Murphy would play in the Sydney finale. Smith expressed uncertainty regarding the necessity of a strike spinner for the match. Considerations include the possibility of fielding two all-rounders, such as Cameron Green and Beau Webster, which could result in Australia playing without a specialist spinner for the third time in four Tests.

Regarding the pitch, Smith commented that it "still looked pretty green yesterday" and "hasn't had a great deal of sunlight." He also noted that the SCG is not generating as much spin as in previous eras and is statistically one of Nathan Lyon's less effective grounds in Australia.

Todd Murphy was not selected for the recent Test at the MCG. His last Test appearance was on the tour of Sri Lanka, and he was included in the Ashes squad as cover for Nathan Lyon.

Cameron Green's Performance and Role

All-rounder Cameron Green's selection also remains under review. The West Australian all-rounder has an average of 18.66 runs across six innings in the current Ashes campaign, with one score exceeding 24 and a highest score of 45 in Brisbane.

Smith commented that Green "gets himself in on a few occasions and probably not gone on with it," observing that "starting your innings is actually your hardest thing. He's doing that pretty well and then just finding a way to get out." Smith also acknowledged that Green's varying positions in the batting order "can't be easy as well when you're trying to nail down one sort of role."

Smith referenced Green's previous contributions, noting he had scored "valuable runs" as the leading run-scorer batting at three in a series in the West Indies on challenging surfaces. Smith concluded that Green "hasn't got the runs he's wanted so far, but I think he's actually looked quite good at times too."

England's Squad Announcement

On Friday, England announced a 12-player squad for the Sydney Test. The squad includes spinner Shoaib Bashir and seamer Matthew Potts. Either Bashir or Potts is expected to make their Ashes Test debut, with Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, and Mark Wood currently on the injured list. Potts has previously played in 10 Test matches.

Match Context and Schedule

The fifth and final Ashes Test between Australia and England is scheduled to commence at the SCG on Sunday at 10:30 AM AEDT. Australia has already secured the Ashes urn. The team's objectives for the upcoming match include accumulating World Test Championship points and providing a successful conclusion for retiring player Usman Khawaja.
