Investigation and Charges

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has initiated an investigation into a South Australian man following a referral from the Department of Defence concerning unauthorized work for a foreign military.

The man, an Australian Army reservist, has been charged with one count of foreign work restricted individual working for a foreign military organisation or government body, under section 115A of the Defence Act 1903. This offense carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment.

The AFP stated that this marks the first time charges have been laid for this specific offense.

Allegations Unveiled

Police allege the 25-year-old man served as a drone operator for the Ukrainian Armed Forces last year. It is further alleged that he traveled to Ukraine in May 2025 to perform this role in the war against Russia without authorization, returning to Australia in January of this year.

On Thursday, April 2, a search warrant was executed at his Felixstow home in Adelaide, resulting in the seizure of electronic devices, including a mobile phone and a laptop. Investigators allege these devices contain images linking him to participation in a foreign conflict.

The reservist is scheduled to appear before the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

AFP Counter Terrorism Commander Paula Hudson stated that the agency works closely with its local, Commonwealth, and international partners to protect Australia’s interests.

The AFP has requested that anyone with information regarding individuals with sensitive defence knowledge intending to work for a foreign military or government body, or who have done so without authorization, should contact the National Security Hotline.
