A growing number of teenage boys are pursuing significant body transformations, aiming for increased muscle mass and reduced fat, often documenting these changes online. Behind some of these visible transformations is the use of trenbolone, a potent drug originally developed for livestock and not approved for human use.

Trenbolone Use and Risks

Zaid Laila, 16, reported using anabolic steroids, including trenbolone, for approximately 10 months to achieve rapid physical changes. Trenbolone, designed to enhance muscle growth in cattle, is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance in the United States, making possession or distribution without a prescription illegal.

Dr. Jason Nagata, a pediatrician specializing in adolescent health at the University of California, San Francisco, stated that anabolic steroids can cause damage to the heart, liver, and kidneys.

He emphasized that trenbolone, due to its powerful nature, poses even more significant side effects and has no safe indication for human consumption.

Social Media's Role and Shifting Motivations

Historically, steroid use was primarily linked to competitive sports. However, Dr. Nagata noted a shift, with many individuals now using these drugs solely for aesthetic improvements.
