Bic Runga Unveils "Red Sunset," Her First Original Album in 15 Years

Musician Bic Runga has released "Red Sunset," her first album of original material in 15 years. The album follows 2011's "Belle" and a 2016 covers album, "Close Your Eyes." Recorded in Paris with collaborator and partner Kody Nielson, "Red Sunset" marks a significant return to Runga's songwriting. Its release in February coincides with the start of an Australian tour in capital cities.

The 15-year gap between original albums was a deliberate choice by Runga, driven by a desire to "experiment with sound and avoid repetition in her work."

Parisian Genesis and Diverse Sounds

The recording of "Red Sunset" took place in Paris, where Runga traveled with her family, including partner Kody Nielson. Nielson, known for his work with The Mint Chicks, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Silicon, played a key role in the album's creation. Runga, who had lived in Paris previously, utilized recording equipment brought to a rented house. She noted a different atmosphere in Paris compared to her earlier visit, describing it as influenced by recent flooding, which contributed to the album's mood.

The album incorporates diverse musical influences:

  • "Paris In The Rain": This track features a late-70s electronic sound, drawing inspiration from artists such as Giorgio Moroder and disco. Notably, its bass line was created using a 200-year-old piano found in their Paris apartment.
  • "Ghost In Your Bed": This song incorporates 60s beat music influences, reminiscent of artists like The Rolling Stones and The Mamas and the Papas, with a driving rhythm and melody. Runga stated the "ghost" in the song refers to internal thoughts and psychological self-doubt.

Reflecting on Her Enduring Hit "Sway"

Runga also reflected on her 1997 hit single, "Sway," noting its distinctive 90s sound and enduring appeal nearly three decades after its release. "Sway" gained prominence through its inclusion in popular media like "Dawson's Creek" and "American Pie."

The song has seen recent reinterpretations by artists such as R3hab and Amy Shark, and a cover by beabadoobee for triple j's Like A Version. Runga maintains an affection for the song, acknowledging its significant impact on her career.

Australian Tour Dates Announced

Bic Runga is scheduled to embark on an Australian tour, performing in capital city theatres. Kody Nielson's project, Silicon, will support her throughout the tour. Runga expressed enthusiasm for incorporating the new songs into her live performances.

The tour is set to commence on Thursday, April 9, in Melbourne, with subsequent shows scheduled for Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, and Fremantle.

Future Creative Horizons

Following the Australian tour, Runga plans another family trip to Paris and intends to record another album. She indicated a desire for a shorter wait time between future releases, expressing a renewed drive for creating music.
