The cinema, which first opened its doors in 1948, is renowned for its continuous operation in North Queensland, its deep history of local patronage, and its role in significant cultural events, including a film premiere.

De Luca took over the family business in 1964, following prior work in agriculture, and has been the driving force behind the Summergarden's enduring presence in the community ever since.
