Meta's Superintelligence Labs Forms Dedicated Hardware Team Led by Rui Xu

Meta's Superintelligence Labs (MSL) has established a dedicated hardware team, appointing Rui Xu to lead the initiative. This development is part of Meta's broader strategy to expand into AI-powered devices, moving beyond its existing smartphone and Reality Labs product focus. The new team will work to integrate personalized AI agents into a range of always-on devices.

Hardware Team Established

Meta's Superintelligence Labs (MSL), an AI division announced last year, has formed a dedicated team focused on hardware development. This move aligns with Meta's strategic objective to expand its presence in AI-powered devices.

Leadership and Expertise

Rui Xu has been appointed to lead the hardware development efforts for MSL. Xu previously headed hardware initiatives at Dreamer, an AI agent startup whose founding team was recently acquired by Meta. His professional background includes serving as chief operating officer at the robotics startup K-Scale. Xu also held leadership roles at ByteDance, where he led a lab responsible for shipping millions of smart devices in China. His extensive experience further extends to management positions at Xiaomi, Lenovo, and Tencent.

Strategic Vision

Alexandr Wang, chief of MSL, has articulated Meta's vision for a future that extends beyond smartphones. Wang indicated that Meta aims for personalized AI agents to be integrated across a "constellation" of always-on devices capable of perceiving their environment.

In a February podcast, Wang stated that Meta anticipates significant development in this area in the coming months, envisioning a future beyond smartphones.

Collaboration with Reality Labs

MSL is operating in close collaboration with Meta's Reality Labs division. Engineers from Reality Labs have reportedly transferred to MSL to prototype the AI division's software using Reality Labs hardware, facilitating the development process for future AI-integrated devices.
