NHS Greater Manchester Expands Virtual Ward Program for Home-Based Care

NHS Greater Manchester has expanded its virtual ward program, which enables patients to receive hospital-level care within their homes, aiming to improve recovery experiences and manage hospital bed capacity. As of January 2026, 883 virtual ward beds are available across the region, providing an equivalent capacity to hundreds of traditional hospital beds through home-based services.

"NHS Greater Manchester has expanded its virtual ward program, which enables patients to receive hospital-level care within their homes."

Program Overview: Hospital-Level Care at Home

The virtual ward program is an integral component of Greater Manchester's wider 'Hospital at Home' strategy, leveraging technology to enhance patient care delivery. This initiative allows individuals with various medical conditions, including heart and lung problems, infections, and frailty, to receive comprehensive, hospital-equivalent care remotely. Clinicians monitor patients' conditions from a distance and can respond promptly to any changes.

The program's capacity has been managed over the past year with the objective of ensuring services remain safe and adequately staffed.

Patient Success Story: Raymond's Recovery

Raymond, a patient in his 60s from Salford diagnosed with heart failure, utilized the virtual ward program for his recovery. He received twice-daily home visits from the Salford Urgent Response team and maintained regular communication with clinicians regarding his care. Raymond reported receiving consistent care from nursing staff during his home treatment.

He stated that the level of attention provided at home was comparable to, or exceeded, what he would have received in a traditional hospital ward.

"Recovering at home contributed to a quicker recovery and that he felt well, expressing a preference for home-based care in the future."

Clinical Insights: Faster, Safer Recoveries

Dr. Bushra Alam, an acute medicine consultant and clinical lead for NHS Greater Manchester virtual wards, commented on the program's impact. Dr. Alam stated that virtual wards are influencing patient care by facilitating faster and more comfortable recoveries at home while ensuring ongoing hospital-level monitoring and support.

She noted that this approach aims to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions, allow for swift intervention if a patient's condition changes, maintain patient safety, and make hospital beds available for patients with the greatest need.

Public Health Advisory: Non-Emergency Care

In response to continued demand for NHS services, residents with urgent but non-life-threatening health concerns are advised to use the NHS 111 online service or contact 111 via phone.
