Google Meet Integrates with Apple CarPlay for In-Car Meetings

Google Meet has integrated with Apple CarPlay, enabling iPhone users to participate in meetings directly from their vehicle's infotainment system. The feature prioritizes driver safety by limiting calls to audio-only and allowing users to join scheduled meetings and view their upcoming schedules. This rollout is currently underway for Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts, with an Android Auto version anticipated in the near future.

The new Google Meet feature on Apple CarPlay prioritizes driver safety by limiting calls to audio-only and allowing users to join scheduled meetings and view upcoming schedules directly from their car's infotainment system.

Integration Overview

Google Meet now appears on Apple CarPlay-enabled infotainment displays, allowing users to join scheduled meetings with a single tap. The primary design principle is to facilitate meeting participation while driving, emphasizing focus on the road. When the app is accessed via CarPlay, the Google Meet mobile application on the iPhone transitions into an "On-the-Go" mode, designed to provide a seamless user experience between the mobile device and the vehicle.

Audio-Only Focus for Safety

To ensure driver safety and minimize distractions, Google Meet calls on Apple CarPlay are exclusively audio-only. The phone's camera is deactivated, and no incoming video content is displayed on the car's screen. Audio from meetings automatically routes from the user's iPhone or connected earbuds to the car's speakers, while the vehicle's microphone provides audio input for the user's participation. In larger meetings, a user's microphone may be muted by default upon joining.

Specific Limitations and Available Controls

The CarPlay integration of Google Meet operates with specific limitations to maintain a focused driving environment. Unavailable features include:

  • Chat functionality
  • Hand Raise
  • Polls
  • Q&A
  • Viewing presentations
  • A pre-call screen
  • The ability to initiate new meetings
  • Host controls for managing participant admissions (accepting or rejecting) through the car's display

Available controls for users are limited to muting and unmuting their microphone and exiting a meeting.

For users who require full Google Meet functionality, such as video participation or access to interactive features, Google advises parking the vehicle and accessing the meeting directly through the Google Meet app on their iPhone. This allows simultaneous participation from both the phone and the car display.

Rollout and Accessibility

The Google Meet for Apple CarPlay feature is currently rolling out to users. To access this functionality, iPhone users must install the latest version of the Google Meet app from the App Store and grant any necessary permissions. The deployment of this feature is expected to be fully completed within approximately 15 days from its recent commencement. It is accessible to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and individuals utilizing personal Google accounts. Google has not specified regional availability for this feature.

Future Plans: Android Auto and Beyond

Google has confirmed that a version of Meet for Android Auto is currently under development and is anticipated for release in the near future. This development aligns with existing in-car communication options, as Android Auto already supports Microsoft Teams with similar audio-only call limitations. This release positions Google Meet's Apple CarPlay integration ahead of its Android Auto counterpart. Additionally, Google is reportedly testing audio-only YouTube playback for Android Auto, also aimed at preventing visual distractions while driving.

Important User Advisory

Users are advised to consult and adhere to local laws and regulations concerning the use of communication devices while operating a vehicle to ensure legal compliance and driver safety.
