China Unveils New Mandatory Power Bank Safety Standard

China has introduced a new mandatory national standard for the safety of power banks, scheduled to become effective on April 1, 2027. This initiative aims to comprehensively enhance the safety of portable energy storage devices, regulate the market, and promote technological advancements within the industry. The standard was formulated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Key Requirements of the Standard

The new standard outlines several stringent requirements designed to improve power bank safety:

• Enhanced Protection: It mandates improved safety protection for power banks when subjected to abusive conditions, including high temperatures, overcharging, and compression.
• Lithium Precipitation Test: A new test has been incorporated to detect lithium precipitation after cycle aging, with the objective of reducing the risk of internal short circuits following prolonged use.
• Abnormal Operation Information: Products will be required to integrate functions for storing and retrieving data related to abnormal operations.
• Unique Identification: Each power bank must carry a unique identification code, enabling consumers to query core information such as the battery brand.

Implementation and Consumer Impact

Following the standard's implementation date, consumers will be permitted to continue possessing and using power banks purchased prior to April 1, 2027, provided these devices are compliant and hold a valid China Compulsory Certification.

The introduction of this standard is anticipated to further regulate the market, encourage technological upgrades within the power bank industry, and better safeguard consumer safety and rights.
