View source

The NSW Fancy Rodent Society recently organized its annual rat and mouse competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The event featured judging across various categories, culminating in the awarding of Grand Champion, Champion, and Reserve Champion titles to the highest-scoring animals.

Competition Highlights

The competition served as a key attraction at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, dedicated to the careful assessment of domestic rats and mice. Rachel Sydenham, a rat keeper and breeder with 30 years of experience, expertly judged the rat entries, while Jennifer Birkett oversaw the evaluation of mouse participants.

Judging criteria for both rats and mice included physical appearance, temperament, overall health, and friendliness.

Judges initiated their assessments by observing the animals within their containers, subsequently handling them to gauge their comfort levels and interaction. Major awards, encompassing Grand Champion, Champion, and Reserve Champion, were determined by consolidating scores from various individual classes. These classes featured diverse categories such as coarse coat, soft coat, and patchwork, with the animals achieving the highest cumulative scores across the show earning the top honors.

Top Award Recipients

Several exceptional animals and their dedicated exhibitors received the prestigious major awards:

  • Grand Champion Mouse: Twisted Whiskaz Xero, exhibited by Samuel Dittmer, claimed this esteemed title after securing first place in the patchwork mouse category.
  • Champion Mouse: Twisted Whiskaz Megan Fox, exhibited by Hollie Winter, was recognized as Champion Mouse, having also achieved first in the long coat marked mouse category.
  • Grand Champion Rat: The nine-month-old rat, Lucy Lou Ragamuffin, exhibited by Sandra McLean, proudly took home the Grand Champion Rat title, complementing her first-place finish in the patchwork rat category.

Spotlight on Exhibitors

The success of the competition is built upon the passion and dedication of its exhibitors:

Samuel Dittmer, the exhibitor of the Grand Champion Mouse, Twisted Whiskaz Xero, boasts 15 years of experience in breeding mice. Dittmer currently cares for approximately 75 mice and highlighted the convenience of small pets like mice for individuals residing in compact living spaces, such as apartments.

Sandra McLean, 79, who exhibited the Grand Champion Rat, Lucy Lou Ragamuffin, embarked on her rat-keeping journey after hand-raising three baby rats. McLean has been a consistent competitor in the show since 2013 and currently maintains a colony of approximately 40 rats.
