Wild Island Adventures Forms Competitor Alliance to Cut Diesel Costs

Wild Island Adventures, a travel company operating in northern Tasmania, has initiated a partnership with competing businesses to manage the impact of rising diesel prices. This collaborative strategy involves consolidating passenger transport for shared destinations and utilizing a credit system among participating companies, reportedly leading to a 40% reduction in fuel expenses for Wild Island Adventures.

Background: Operations and Escalating Fuel Expenses

Wild Island Adventures, based in Perth, Tasmania, specializes in transporting hikers to various locations including Freycinet, the Overland Track, and Tasmania’s west coast. The company also provides rental services for hiking and camping equipment.

Justin Goebel, owner of Wild Island Adventures, reported that the company's fuel costs have approximately doubled since its acquisition in February of the previous year. Drivers associated with the company sometimes travel over 1,000 kilometers during a 12-hour shift. A recent refueling of three buses exceeded $500, highlighting the increased operational expenses. Goebel has stated that rising diesel prices present a significant challenge for his business.

Collaborative Strategy: Consolidating Transport and Credit System

In response to these financial pressures, Wild Island Adventures has collaborated with other operators to consolidate passenger transport. The arrangement entails:

  • Combining bookings for shared destinations onto a single vehicle.
  • Utilizing a credit system for subsequent trips among the participating companies.

This cooperative model has reportedly resulted in a saving of approximately 40% on fuel costs for Wild Island Adventures.

Broader Outlook and Additional Partnerships

Goebel has expressed that he anticipates this collaborative model may encourage other Tasmanian businesses to adopt similar cooperative strategies during periods of economic difficulty.

Beyond the competitor partnership, Wild Island Adventures also maintains existing collaborations with local gear hire businesses. These partnerships aim to reduce expenses associated with delivering hiking equipment to locations such as Hobart and Devonport.
