Manly Dominates Dolphins 52-18 in Foran's Coaching Debut

Manly secured a resounding 52-18 victory over the Dolphins at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe, marking Kieran Foran's debut as the team's interim coach. The win followed the departure of head coach Anthony Seibold and represented a significant turnaround for Manly, who had lost their first three matches of the season.

Record-Breaking Performance

Manly defeated the Dolphins by an impressive 34-point margin, equalling the record for the largest victory by a team immediately following a coaching change in the National Rugby League (NRL). Foran's debut was also historic:

Kieran Foran became the third coach in NRL history to see his team score 50 points in his debut match, following Charles Fraser (Balmain, 1921) and Andrew Farrar (Illawarra, 1997). Foran had been appointed interim coach just one day prior to the match.

First Half Domination

Manly established a commanding 28-0 lead by half-time, showcasing a vastly improved offense. The opening try was scored by Tom Trbojevic, assisted by Haumole Olakau'atu, who skillfully evaded a tackle from Dolphins co-captain Tom Gilbert. Lehi Hopoate quickly extended Manly's lead to 12-0 after a series of passes.

The Dolphins faced further challenges when lock Morgan Knowles was sin-binned for a professional foul, allowing Manly to further consolidate control. Hopoate capitalized on the numerical advantage, scoring his second try after collecting a dropped ball from Kulikefu Finefeuiaki and running 50 meters. Olakau'atu continued to be a key playmaker, assisting a try for Reuben Garrick with a short pass. Jamal Fogarty also contributed, setting up Luke Brooks with a grubber kick for another try before the break. The Dolphins' offense was characterized by disorganization and errors during this period.

Second Half Developments

Following the break, Manly continued their scoring spree. Haumole Olakau'atu scored a try against Dolphins five-eighth Kodi Nikorima, further extending their lead. Tolutau Koula and Ben Trbojevic also added tries to Manly's tally.

The Dolphins managed to find some points in the second half, with fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow scoring two tries for his team. A notable moment occurred when Manly's star player, Tom Trbojevic, underwent a Head Injury Assessment (HIA). He passed the assessment but did not return to the field, a strategic decision made by interim coach Foran.

Key Player Performances

Manly showcased a strong team effort, with significant contributions from several players. The Trbojevic brothers (Tom, Jake, and Ben) were integral to the team's performance. Haumole Olakau'atu was a standout figure on the right edge, recording an impressive 250 running meters, two linebreaks, two try assists, and one try. Jake Trbojevic played a crucial role in the middle of the field.

For the Dolphins, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow was the sole try-scorer, registering both of his team's tries.

Post-Match Reflections

Interim coach Kieran Foran described the week leading up to the match as a "whirlwind" and "intense." He expressed that he had anticipated such a performance from the team, emphasizing that the challenge now for the players was to deliver a complete performance for longer periods.

Foran noted that while the team played "outstanding for 67 minutes," they conceded 18 points late in the game, viewing the win as a crucial "building block" for future matches.

He admitted to experiencing pre-game nerves, which led him to walk several kilometers in Brisbane, and conveyed his desire for the win for the club and the players, acknowledging their dedication during the pre-season. Foran credited the players for taking accountability for their situation and committing to their roles.

Manly captain Tom Trbojevic echoed this sentiment, stating that Foran and CEO Jason King had challenged the players to individually assess their contributions to the team's initial struggles. Trbojevic indicated that the team's positive response to this challenge served as a catalyst for their improved performance.

Disciplinary Actions and Injuries

The match saw several disciplinary actions. In addition to Morgan Knowles' sin-bin for a professional foul, Dolphins players Knowles, Thomas Flegler, and Connelly Lemuelu were all placed on report during the game.

On the injury front, Tom Trbojevic's HIA in the second half was cleared, but he did not return to the game as a precautionary measure by the coaching staff.
