Dimbulah Man Charged with Murder and Corpse Misconduct

A 37-year-old man from Dimbulah has been charged with murder and misconduct with a corpse by interfering following the death of a 70-year-old man. The charges have been classified as domestic violence offences. The accused has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Discovery and Allegations

Human remains were discovered at a rural property on Stock Road, Dimbulah, on March 24 at approximately 8pm. The property is located about two hours west of Cairns in Far North Queensland. This grim discovery was made during a welfare check.

Upon arrival, officers observed a fire burning on the property, which contained what they believed to be human remains.

Police allege the 70-year-old man's death occurred the night before, on March 23, following an altercation between the two men at the Stock Road residence.

Detective Inspector Jason Chetham stated that police further allege the victim's body was burned after the death. The two men, who were related through marriage, were reportedly the sole occupants of the property at the time.

Arrest and Continued Appeal

The accused was taken into custody in Mareeba on March 31 at approximately 2pm. Detective Inspector Chetham described the investigation as intensive, acknowledging the significant efforts of officers and forensic teams involved. He also extended gratitude to the public for providing information that assisted the inquiry.

Despite charges being laid, authorities continue to appeal for anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward. This appeal is particularly significant given the tight-knit nature of the Dimbulah community.
