Raspberry Pi Introduces 3 GB Pi 4 Variant Amidst Broad Price Increases

Raspberry Pi has announced price increases across several products in its range, a move primarily driven by escalating memory costs impacting product pricing. This adjustment comes alongside the introduction of a new 3 GB variant of the Raspberry Pi 4, engineered to navigate the current memory market conditions.

Significant Price Adjustments Detailed

The announced price adjustments include several key products in the Raspberry Pi lineup:

  • A substantial $100 increase has been applied to the 16 GB Raspberry Pi 5. Units of this model were recently observed selling for approximately $365.98 (Farnell) and $389.42 (The Pi Hut), including VAT.
  • The flagship Pi 500+ has seen a $150 increase in its price.
  • The 1 GB Compute Module 4 and 4S each increased by $11.25.
  • The recently released Pi AI HAT+ 2's price also rose by $50.

The 16 GB Raspberry Pi 5 now carries a $100 higher price tag, reflecting the significant impact of rising memory costs.

Products Maintaining Original Prices

Conversely, several products have maintained their original pricing, untouched by the recent adjustments. These include:

  • The Pi 400
  • The 1 GB and 2 GB variants of the Pi 4 and Pi 5
  • Older models such as the Pi Zero, Zero 2, 1, 3, 3B+, and 3A+

According to Pi boss Eben Upton, the reason for the stability of these particular products is their utilization of LPDDR2 DRAM. The company currently holds substantial inventory of this specific memory type, thereby shielding these models from the immediate pressures of the current memory market.

Introduction of 3 GB Pi 4 and Future Outlook

In an effort to expand memory-density options and address current market realities, engineering work has led to the introduction of the 3 GB Raspberry Pi 4. This new variant is priced at $83.75, a figure that reflects prevailing memory market conditions.

Despite the company's recent strong results, warnings were issued regarding future memory market challenges.

Eben Upton concluded that 2026 is expected to be another difficult year for memory pricing, and the company is actively working to mitigate the impact. He reiterated that the current situation is temporary and that price increases will be reversed once market conditions improve.
