Cambodia Monitors New 'Cicada' COVID Variant

Cambodia's health authorities are closely monitoring a new SARS-CoV-2 variant, BA.3.2, also known as the 'Cicada' variant, which has been identified in several countries. While currently showing no signs of severe impact, the Department of Communicable Disease Control (CDC) is increasing surveillance and preparing for potential transmission.

Domestic Surveillance Intensifies

Cambodia's Department of Communicable Disease Control (CDC) has initiated monitoring of the new SARS-CoV-2 variant, BA.3.2, colloquially named the 'Cicada' variant. This variant has already been detected in nations including the U.S., U.K., and Japan.

The variant currently shows no indication of causing serious outbreaks or significant public health impacts within these regions. Nevertheless, the CDC is proactively enhancing its surveillance capabilities and developing response measures for any potential community transmission in Cambodia.

Expert Opinion and Public Guidance

Public health expert Dr. Quach Mengly has assured the public that there is no need for alarm regarding the BA.3.2 variant. Dr. Mengly pointed to Cambodia's high vaccination rates and the prevailing summer season as factors that significantly reduce the likelihood of widespread transmission.

He noted that the symptoms associated with the 'Cicada' variant are consistent with those of previous strains, typically including cough, fever, and headache. Citizens are advised to continue practicing standard hygiene protocols to protect themselves.

Enhanced Airport Measures

In a move to bolster national defenses, the Ministry of Health has reinforced quarantine and infection prevention measures at Techo International Airport. During an inspection conducted on March 28, Health Minister Chheang Ra underscored the paramount importance of proactive discipline at all entry points.

International Classification

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized BA.3.2 as a 'variant under monitoring.' This classification signifies that while the variant is being observed closely, it does not currently meet the criteria for a 'variant of interest' or 'variant of concern.'
