Capcom Outlines Long-Term Mega Man Strategy

Capcom has unveiled a comprehensive long-term strategy for the Mega Man franchise, aiming to create a more consistent release schedule by balancing new titles with legacy collections. This approach seeks to grow the series' fanbase while diligently preserving its historical legacy and core characteristics.

Alternating Releases: The Core Strategy

Shingo Izumi, lead producer for the Mega Man series, confirmed that Capcom's goal is to alternate between new game releases and collection titles over time. This strategic rhythm is designed to prevent the extended gaps between major releases that have been observed in the past, such as the period between Mega Man 11 (2018) and the upcoming Mega Man: Dual Override (scheduled for 2027).

The development of new titles will continue to utilize the RE Engine.

Current & Future Mega Man Titles

As a direct implementation of this new strategy, Capcom has recently launched the Mega Man Star Force: Legacy Collection.

Recent Release: Star Force Collection

The Mega Man Star Force: Legacy Collection is now available on:

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Nintendo Switch
  • PC via Steam

Upcoming: Dual Override

Additionally, a brand-new entry, Mega Man: Dual Override, is currently deep in development. This title is targeting a 2027 release and is planned for a wide range of platforms:

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 5
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch 2
  • Xbox
  • PC via Steam

Strategic Rationale and Franchise Context

Izumi articulated the dual purpose behind this approach: legacy collections serve to reintroduce the franchise to new players while simultaneously preserving its rich history and game culture. Concurrently, new entries are specifically designed to build upon the series' established foundation, pushing the boundaries of what Mega Man can be.

The Mega Man franchise, which first originated in 1987, is rapidly approaching its 40th anniversary. It has sold over 43 million copies across various platforms since its inception, cementing its status as a significant property for Capcom. The company considers Mega Man one of its important series, integrating it into a broader strategy to maximize intellectual property value. This includes various transmedia initiatives and merchandise, such as the past "Fully Charged" TV show.
