Turkey Qualifies for World Cup, Defeating Kosovo in Qualifier

Turkey has qualified for the World Cup after defeating Kosovo in a qualifier match. This victory marks Turkey's return to the global football stage, having last reached the semi-finals in 2002. Kerem Akturkoglu scored the decisive goal, securing their place.

Kosovo players showed visible emotion following the conclusion of their World Cup qualification hopes. Edon Zhegrova encouraged teammates to acknowledge their supporters despite the loss.

"I feel sorry for the whole team and the entire country. I’m very proud of the players, very proud of myself, but fate didn’t want it."
– Kosovo captain Vedat Muriqi

Kosovo's Valiant Effort

Kosovo displayed strong effort throughout the match, which was played in windy and rainy conditions. Fisnik Asllani had a first-half shot tipped onto the bar by Turkey's goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir and was denied another opportunity later in the game. Captain Vedat Muriqi served as a focal point in Kosovo's attack, consistently pressing forward.

The Decisive Goal

Turkey's Kenan Yildiz contributed to offensive pressure against Kosovo, creating goal-scoring opportunities. Eight minutes into the second half, Yildiz delivered a cross to Orkun Kokcu. Kokcu's shot was redirected into the net by Akturkoglu, putting Turkey ahead. Kosovo appealed for offside, but the goal stood after review.

In the later stages of the game, Kosovo increased their offensive efforts. Florent Muslija made a shot that went wide, and Cakir saved another attempt from Asllani. Despite their push, Turkey maintained their lead until the final whistle. The match generated significant public interest in Pristina, Kosovo.

Looking Ahead: Kosovo's Future

With their World Cup qualification hopes now ended, Kosovo will focus on the Euro 2028 qualifiers. Manager Franco Foda, formerly of Austria, had set Euro 2028 qualification as an initial goal for the team.

"The future is bright. I’m not concerned about the future of this team. We are going in a good direction and I’m sure it will soon reach its potential."
– Franco Foda, Kosovo Manager
