Syrian President Pledges Neutrality Amid Regional Tensions
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has pledged neutrality concerning the conflict involving Iran and the situation in Lebanon. These statements were made following years of civil war in Syria, which concluded prior to his assumption of power at the end of 2024.
Concerns Over Syrian Involvement
The president's comments address concerns that Syria could become involved in Lebanon due to increasing pressure on the country from Israeli operations targeting Hezbollah fighters. Al-Sharaa was reportedly targeted in an assassination attempt by Hezbollah during the previous year, adding a significant personal context to his current declarations.
A Stance of Non-Intervention
Speaking at an event in London, President al-Sharaa clearly articulated his nation's position:
"Unless Syria is targeted by any party, Syria will remain outside any conflict."
He further underscored his country's weariness of conflict, remarking, "We had enough war. We paid a large bill. We are not ready for another war experience."
Diplomatic Engagements in London
Earlier on the same day, President al-Sharaa met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. He also conducted talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, engaging in high-level discussions during his visit.
Background of President al-Sharaa
These statements align with al-Sharaa's current positioning as a political leader. This role succeeds his previous one as commander of the al-Nusra Front, which he formed with support from al-Qaeda.
