Sony Refiles Trademark for 'Mimic' Experimental Gun Controller
Sony Interactive Entertainment has refiled a trademark for "Mimic," an experimental gun controller. This device was previously showcased at CES 2025 during the company's Future Immersive Entertainment demonstration.
CES 2025 Demonstration & Advanced Haptics
The Mimic controller is a wireless gun peripheral designed with advanced haptic feedback. Attendees at the CES 2025 event could experience the technology firsthand, which was demonstrated with a game involving zombies from 'The Last of Us.'
Bridging Virtual and Real: The Mimic's Innovation
The core innovation of the Mimic controller lies in its groundbreaking haptics and weight-shifting capabilities.
Guy Wilday, VP of Interactive Technology at Sony Pictures Entertainment, described the Mimic controller as providing "a new level of haptics of inertia and weight that has never been done in gaming." He further stated that it incorporates a "weight-shifting module inside," translating every hold and swipe as an intent, aiming to bridge the virtual and real worlds.
Potential for Consumer Release
Sony has a history of bringing trademarked concepts to market. The company previously filed trademarks for "Flexstrike," a PS5 fighting stick, and "Pulse Elevate," wireless speakers with built-in microphones, both of which have since been released as consumer products.
While Mimic is currently an experimental R&D concept, the prior release of these other trademarked items suggests a potential for future consumer availability. The platform best suited for such a peripheral, like the PSVR2 or a future PlayStation console, remains to be determined.
