Award Honors Legacy of Global Health Pioneer, Recognizes Groundbreaking Work in Salt Substitute

Professor Bruce Neal, Executive Director of The George Institute for Global Health in Australia, has been honored with the inaugural 2025 NHMRC Michael Alpers Global Health Award. The prestigious award was presented at the NHMRC Research Excellence Awards Dinner in Canberra on March 31, 2026.

Recognizing Global Health Contributions

This award acknowledges an NHMRC-funded researcher whose work has made a significant contribution to global health. It specifically honors the enduring legacy of the late Emeritus Professor Michael Alpers AO CSM FAA FRS, widely acclaimed for his foundational work in infectious diseases.

Pioneering Potassium-Enriched Salt

Professor Neal's impactful research centers on the critical role of potassium-enriched salt in improving public health.

Modern diets are frequently characterized by an imbalance: excessive sodium coupled with insufficient potassium. This dietary pattern is a significant contributor to elevated blood pressure and a heightened risk of serious conditions, including stroke, heart attack, and kidney disease. Potassium-enriched salt offers a dual solution, effectively reducing sodium intake while simultaneously increasing essential potassium levels.

The Salt Substitute and Stroke Study

The George Institute's NHMRC-funded Salt Substitute and Stroke Study provided compelling evidence for the efficacy of this approach.

The study demonstrated that a specific formulation, comprising 75% sodium chloride and 25% potassium chloride, led to a significant reduction in the risks of stroke, major cardiovascular events, and premature death. Remarkably, over 90% of participants continued to use the salt substitute even after five years, underscoring its acceptability and practicality.

Acknowledging Team Effort and Future Potential

Professor Neal emphasized that this award is a testament to the collective effort of a large team working diligently over an extended period.

He indicated that widespread adoption of potassium-enriched salt could prevent millions of premature strokes, heart attacks, and deaths annually.

The funding accompanying the award will be instrumental in supporting new trials and fostering multi-sector collaborations. These initiatives aim to promote policy and industry adoption of potassium-enriched salt globally, with a strategic focus on low- and middle-income countries where the health burden is often highest. Professor Neal also holds distinguished appointments at UNSW Sydney and Imperial College London.
