Apple Intelligence Features Briefly Surface in China Due to Deployment Error
Apple inadvertently began deploying Apple Intelligence features in China prior to obtaining regulatory approval, according to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Certain users in China observed Apple Intelligence features appearing as available and active within their iPhone's Settings application. Apple had not issued a formal announcement regarding these features. Gurman reported that Apple had no immediate plans for the feature's launch and that its appearance was an error. Apple subsequently removed the Apple Intelligence features.
Unintended Rollout and Operational Clues
Gurman noted that Apple would typically announce AI feature launches in China and would not initiate a rollout during local night hours. Additionally, the feature currently incorporates Google reverse image search, a service that is prohibited in China.
Regulatory Hurdles and Technical Conflicts
Apple has faced challenges in launching Apple Intelligence features in China due to the country's restrictions on foreign AI technology. While Apple is collaborating with Alibaba for Apple Intelligence capabilities, regulatory approval is required from China's Cyberspace Administration (CAC).
The CAC is mandated to test and approve all AI models before AI services can launch in China, a process that has experienced delays.
Uncertain Timeline Amidst Local Competition
The timeline for Apple Intelligence features to become available in China remains uncertain, though Apple reportedly seeks to launch in the market. Competitors such as Huawei and Xiaomi currently offer various AI features to Chinese customers, positioning them ahead in AI offerings within the region.
