Trump International Airport, Presidential Library Plans Unveiled

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport as "President Donald J. Trump International Airport," effective July 1. This development coincides with the unveiling of architectural renderings for the planned Donald J. Trump Presidential Library, a skyscraper in Miami.

Airport Renaming Details

On Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill to officially change the name of Palm Beach International Airport (PBIA) to "President Donald J. Trump International Airport," with an effective date of July 1. This designation follows legislative actions at both state and federal levels.

The renaming process is scheduled to include a new airport identifier, "DJT," and directs relevant federal agencies to update all references.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that while airport name changes are typically local issues not requiring FAA approval, the agency would undertake administrative tasks such as updating navigational charts and databases.

This contrasts with some reports indicating FAA approval is required. The FAA is expected to coordinate with organizations like the International Air Transport Association for the adoption of the new airport code.

The Florida House approved the renaming proposal with an 81–30 vote earlier this year. State funding, including $2.75 million outlined in the Senate budget, has been allocated for necessary signage, branding updates, and operational adjustments for the implementation by the July 1 deadline.

Eric Trump, son of Donald Trump, acknowledged the rebrand on social media. U.S. Representative Brian Mast (FL-21) introduced companion federal legislation to formalize the name change nationally, citing Trump's long-standing connection to Palm Beach County.

According to United States Patent and Trademark Office records, Mr. Trump's family business submitted a trademark application for the new name in February, also encompassing various travel-related items. The Trump Organization clarified that this application was initiated due to the Florida bill and that the family would not receive royalties, licensing fees, or financial compensation from the proposed airport renaming.

Florida Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell criticized the decision, stating that Republican leaders prioritized the airport renaming over addressing affordability issues for Floridians, characterizing the use of taxpayer dollars for this purpose as a "political stunt."

Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Plans

Concurrent with the airport renaming, former President Donald Trump presented plans for his presidential library in Miami through a video shared on Truth Social. The renderings depict a large skyscraper adorned with the name "Trump" in gold lettering across its facade, featuring a spire.

The proposed design, credited to Miami-based firm Bermello Ajamil, includes:

  • A presidential jet, identified as a Boeing 747 or V-25, displayed in the lobby.
  • Gold escalators.
  • A large ballroom and replica Oval Office.
  • Rooftop gardens or lawns.
  • A large golden statue of Trump with a raised fist.
  • Displays of an American flag, screens featuring videos of Trump, and other aircraft including military jets and helicopters.
  • Replicas from Trump’s White House tenure, such as the West Colonnade with a presidential walk of fame.

The library is planned for a nearly 3-acre waterfront property in downtown Miami, valued at over $67 million. Miami Dade College allocated this land to the state for the library's development. A legal challenge against this land transfer was dismissed by a judge in December, allowing the transfer to proceed.

Court records in February indicated the state officially transferred the property to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation Inc. for $10, with the condition that construction on a library, museum, or center begins within five years. The proposed site is located near Trump National Doral.

Trump’s social media post included a link for contributions to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation Inc.

Eric Trump had previously stated the library would be "one of the most beautiful buildings ever built" and "an Icon on the Miami skyline."

Other Recognitions and Proposals

The airport renaming is part of broader efforts and proposals to affix Donald Trump's name to various pieces of infrastructure and institutions. A section of road connecting the Palm Beach airport to Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate was previously renamed "Donald J. Trump Boulevard."

Other reported naming initiatives and proposals include:

  • A "Trump-class" navy battleship currently in development.
  • A plan for Trump’s signature to appear on American paper currency as part of the nation’s 250th-anniversary celebrations, as announced by the U.S. Treasury.
  • A commemorative gold coin featuring his face, approved by the Commission of Fine Arts.
  • The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., officially renamed the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Centre for the Performing Arts by a board chaired by Trump.
  • The U.S. Institute of Peace building also includes his name.
  • Plans advancing for a new White House ballroom and a memorial arch near the Potomac River, with the ballroom design scheduled for a final vote before the National Capital Planning Commission, chaired by Will Scharf, Trump's staff secretary.

Naming public infrastructure after presidents is an established American tradition.
