Author Andy Weir Expresses Criticism of Modern Star Trek and Reveals Unaccepted Pitch

Writer Andy Weir, known for "Project Hail Mary," recently expressed strong criticism regarding current Star Trek television productions during an appearance on the Critical Drinker podcast. Weir also disclosed that Paramount did not accept a Star Trek show he had pitched to them.

Weir's Commentary on Modern Star Trek

During the podcast, Weir referenced an analyst's comment that highlighted a perceived shift in the franchise's influence:

"All modern science fiction TV shows and movies have been heavily influenced by the original Star Trek — except for the current batch of Star Trek shows."

Weir noted his early science fiction exposure included original series Star Trek and Lost in Space reruns, with new space-focused sci-fi appearing with Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Weir shared his personal views on various Star Trek series, indicating a mix of approval and strong disapproval. He stated he likes Strange New Worlds, found Enterprise "kind of weird," and considered Lower Decks "entertaining and fun." However, regarding other recent Star Trek productions, he indicated strong disapproval:

"All the others, they can go. ...those shows are shit."

He clarified that while he found executive producer Alex Kurtzman to be a "really nice guy," his pitch was not accepted.

Star Trek Production Landscape Shifts

The discussion also included updates on the status of Star Trek productions at Paramount+. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was confirmed to conclude after its already-shot second season. Currently, no new Star Trek projects are in production, although Strange New Worlds has two more years and Starfleet Academy has another season yet to air.

Speculation surrounds the future of Alex Kurtzman, who has led Paramount's Star Trek TV revival. His deal with CBS Studios concludes at the end of 2026, and Paramount+ is reportedly in discussions to renew or extend his agreement.

Following the news of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's cancellation, Kurtzman, along with EPs Noga Landau and Gaia Violo, issued an open letter. The letter emphasized Gene Roddenberry's original vision for Star Trek, highlighting its message of:

"infinite diversity in infinite combinations," optimism, and a future free of war and intolerance, while also serving as a warning based on humanity's potential for conflict.
