Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour: "The Phantom of the Opera"
Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour has opened its production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera," marking the iconic show's global 40th anniversary. This staging is the first major event in a worldwide program of celebrations.
About the Iconic Musical
Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, "Le Fantôme de L’Opéra," the musical depicts a mysterious masked figure residing beneath the Paris Opera House, influencing those within. "The Phantom of the Opera" has been performed for over 160 million people globally and has received over 70 major theatre awards.
The Sydney Harbour Production
The Sydney Harbour production, directed by Simon Phillips, first premiered in 2022. The production is set on Australia’s largest outdoor stage, which floats on water.
Phillips reunited with the creative team, including Set and Costume Designer Gabriela Tylesova, Choreographer and Associate Director Simone Sault, Lighting Designer Nick Schlieper, and Sound Designer Shelly Lee.
Meet the Cast
Jake Lyle performs as the Phantom, marking his professional debut in the role. Amy Manford portrays Christine, a role she previously performed on the West End. Jarrod Draper completes the central love triangle as Raoul.
Supporting cast members include Debora Krizak as Madame Giry, Brent Hill and Martin Crewes as Monsieur Firmin and Monsieur André, Guiseppina Grech as Carlotta Giudicelli, Daniel Belle as Ubaldo Piangi, and Jayme Jo Massoud as Meg Giry.
Spectacular Technical Elements
Technical aspects of the production feature a working moat, live flames, pyrotechnics, fireworks, and a live organ. A notable element is the chandelier, suspended by a crane.
