Apple Discontinues Mac Pro Desktop Line, No Future Models Planned

Apple has officially confirmed the discontinuation of its Mac Pro desktop computer line, stating that no future models are planned. The product has been removed from Apple's "buy" page, with its former web page now redirecting to other sections of the company's website.

The discontinuation of the Mac Pro marks the end of an era for Apple's high-end, modular desktop offering, with no future iterations expected.

The Mac Pro's Final Iteration and Pricing

The current industrial design of the Mac Pro was initially launched in 2019. It debuted alongside the Pro Display XDR, which itself was also recently discontinued by Apple.

This version of the Mac Pro, initially powered by Intel processors, received its last refresh in June 2023, integrating the M2 Ultra chip. However, it has not received any further updates since that time.

Significantly, its price remained fixed at $6,999, even after Apple introduced the more advanced M3 Ultra chip in the Mac Studio last year, highlighting a potential disconnect in its value proposition.

Mac Studio Takes the "Pro" Desktop Mantle

With the Mac Pro's exit, the Mac Studio is now firmly established as Apple's designated "pro" desktop Mac. This powerful unit offers substantial performance and customization options.

The Mac Studio can be configured with the M3 Ultra chip, providing:

  • A 32-core CPU
  • An 80-core GPU
  • Up to 256GB of unified memory
  • Up to 16TB of SSD storage

Apple's Current Desktop and Notebook Offerings

Following the discontinuation of the Mac Pro, Apple's current lineup of desktop computers is now streamlined:

  • 24-inch iMac with M4
  • Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro
  • Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra

The company also continues to offer three distinct notebook lines:

  • MacBook Neo
  • MacBook Air
  • MacBook Pro
