The incident occurred around 3:30 AM (0230 GMT) on Saturday in the city's 8th arrondissement, near the Champs-Élysées. Police officers reportedly observed two suspects carrying a shopping bag near the Bank of America. One suspect was seen attempting to ignite a device with a lighter.
Following the intervention, one individual was apprehended, while the second individual reportedly fled the scene.
Device Description
Police found a device containing five liters of liquid, believed to be fuel, along with an ignition system. Initial assessments indicated that the ignition component included 650 grams of explosive powder. The device has since been transferred to the Paris police's forensics lab for comprehensive analysis.
Official Investigation Initiated
France’s national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office (PNAT) has initiated an investigation into the incident. The probe focuses on alleged terrorism-related offenses, including:
- Attempted damage by fire or other dangerous means, in connection with a terrorist undertaking.
- Manufacturing and possession of incendiary or explosive devices with intent to cause damage.
- Involvement in a terrorist criminal association or conspiracy.
The detained individual remains in police custody. The Paris judicial police and France’s domestic intelligence service (General Directorate for Internal Security) are involved in the investigation.
Broader Security Context
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez commended the rapid intervention by Paris police, stating that their actions prevented a violent act of a terrorist nature. He emphasized that vigilance in France "remains more than ever at a high level," citing the "current international situation" and increased domestic security concerns in European countries due to the Middle East conflict.
Minister Nuñez had previously indicated that French authorities increased personal protection for some Iranian opposition figures and enhanced security around potential target sites. These sites include locations linked to U.S. interests and the Jewish community, measures taken since what he referred to as the 'Iran war' began.
