Foran Steps In as Interim Head Coach for Manly Sea Eagles After Seibold's Dismissal

Kieran Foran has been appointed interim Head Coach for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles for the remainder of the 2026 season. This move follows the swift dismissal of Anthony Seibold from the head coaching position last Friday, after the team's challenging 0-3 start to the season. Foran, who had been serving as an Assistant Coach, will lead the team for his first game on Thursday against the Dolphins.

Seibold's Abrupt Departure

Anthony Seibold was removed from his coaching role on Friday evening. He had held the position since 2023, with his contract extended through the 2027 season.

Seibold's coaching record at Manly included 37 wins from 77 games and one finals series appearance.

His dismissal followed three consecutive home losses to start the current season: a golden point defeat to Canberra, a loss to Newcastle, and a defeat by the Roosters. Reports indicated fan dissatisfaction prior to his departure.

Foran's Rapid Ascent and Initial Response

Kieran Foran was contacted by club officials, including CEO Jason King and Chairman Scott Penn, shortly after Seibold's departure. Foran described the period as rapid and expressed surprise at both Seibold's dismissal and the subsequent offer to take on the interim role.

He stated he processed the offer before accepting it, citing his strong connection to the club as a key factor. Foran affirmed his commitment to the club, stating his dedication to challenges.

Foran, who had served as an assistant coach under Seibold for four and a half months, has not yet made contact with his predecessor despite attempting to call him on Friday evening. Foran expressed empathy for Seibold, crediting him with significant contributions to his early coaching development and the opportunity to return to Manly. He also supported the club's decision, acknowledging its right to act in its best interest.

A New Era: Foran's Background and Coaching Philosophy

Foran concluded his NRL playing career at the end of the 2025 season. He played 196 games for Manly across two stints over nine seasons, including during their 2011 NRL premiership victory. He has been designated a life member of the club, having made 318 appearances over 17 seasons and played 34 Test matches for New Zealand. At 35 years old, Foran's appointment marks one of the fastest transitions from an NRL player to a head coach in recent history.

His first day as interim head coach was Sunday, where he conducted meetings and addressed the playing group alongside Jason King.

Foran's immediate focus is to stabilize the team environment. He stated he does not plan to implement significant changes to the processes and structures established by Anthony Seibold. His primary objective is to improve the team's performance.

Foran intends to engage in direct conversations with the nine former teammates who remain at Manly from 2022. He has made one forced change for the upcoming game, with Jason Saab unavailable due to suspension, and does not anticipate widespread team changes to maintain cohesion. Foran also stated his intent to allow young half Joey Walsh time to develop in NSW Cup, aiming to cultivate the team's next generation.

Club's Confidence and Varied External Reactions

Sea Eagles Chairman Scott Penn stated that Foran's recent playing career provides him with an understanding of the current pace of the game. CEO Jason King noted Foran's adaptation in his Assistant Coach role and expressed confidence in his leadership.

The appointment has drawn varied commentary. Some sports analysts, such as Dave Riccio, characterized the move as a "PR stunt" and questioned its strategic value, citing Foran's limited coaching experience. Others, like Paul Crawley, raised concerns regarding the club's "lack of foresight."

Conversely, individuals associated with the sport have voiced support. NRL pundit Braith Anasta highlighted Foran's status as a former player, his understanding of success, and his relationships with players.

Sea Eagles captain Tom Trbojevic stated Foran would coach with the same dedication he showed as a player, a sentiment echoed by player Reuben Garrick. The Manly Sea Eagles have a history of appointing coaches with strong ties to the club, with previous successful coaches often being former captains and premiership players.

Eye on the Dolphins: Immediate Challenges and Future Prospects

Foran will lead the Sea Eagles in his first game as interim coach on Thursday against the Dolphins at Kayo Stadium. The team aims to secure its first victory of the year and must address issues such as ball security, following 13 errors in their last game against the Roosters. Key players Tom Trbojevic and Haumole Olakau'atu are expected to perform, and halfback Jamal Fogarty will be matched against Dolphins player Isaiya Katoa.

While Foran is serving as interim coach, several individuals are being considered for the full-time head coach position, including Foran himself should the team's performance improve.

Other names mentioned include former Eels mentor Brad Arthur, Broncos assistant Matt Ballin, and Dragons assistant Mick Ennis. Foran has indicated he views coaching as a long-term career. The club faces salary cap limitations, suggesting Foran's focus will likely be on maximizing the performance of the existing squad and developing young talent.
